Cremation Costs in Phoenix, Mesa, and the East Valley

Families shopping for direct cremation in the Phoenix metro area can encounter surprisingly different prices, even when the services appear nearly identical. The average cremation cost in Phoenix is about $1,437, but Arizona providers can charge anywhere from about $1,000 to $6,000 or more depending on the provider, package, and added services.

That makes it important to look beyond a single advertised number. City averages offer a useful starting point, but the provider you choose and what is actually included can have a much larger impact on the final cost.

Average Direct Cremation Prices Across Arizona

US Funerals Online compiled 2026 direct-cremation pricing for major Arizona cities. Using only its average-price figures, the costs are:

City

Average Direct Cremation Price

Chandler

$1,444

Gilbert

$1,437

Glendale

$1,467

Mesa

$1,444

Peoria

$1,437

Phoenix

$1,437

Scottsdale

$1,444

Tucson

$1,347

The numbers show that geography alone does not create a large price difference among Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, and Scottsdale. Their averages are separated by only a few dollars. For example, the average cremation cost in Phoenix and the fees for cremation services in Mesa, AZ are nearly identical.

The much bigger swing happens at the provider level. One provider may charge around $1,000 for direct cremation while another in the same area may charge $2,500 or more for essentially the same type of service.

Why Can Direct Cremation Prices Vary So Much?

Direct cremation is the simplest form of cremation. It typically involves transportation of the deceased, refrigerated care, necessary paperwork, a basic cremation container, the cremation itself, and a temporary container for the cremated remains.

Yet providers structure and price those services differently. A traditional funeral home may have larger facilities, more staff, and greater overhead than a business focused primarily on simple cremation. Some providers also bundle services or products into packages, while others begin with a low base price and charge separately for additional needs.

Possible additional charges can include:

  • Transportation beyond a defined service area
  • Removal from a private residence
  • Removal of a pacemaker or other combustible medical device
  • Handling of overweight individuals
  • After-hours or weekend service

This is why two quotes that both say “direct cremation” may not ultimately produce the same bill.

Permit and Death Certificate Fees Can Be Separate

Arizona families should also pay attention to charges that may not be included in an advertised package.

Most cremation packages include completion and filing of required documents, authorizations, and permits. However, certain county or third-party fees, including cremation permit costs and certified death certificates, may be charged separately. Some providers include a permit and one death certificate in the package, while others do not.

You’ll need certified copies of death certificates in the future to handle insurance claims, financial accounts, property, government benefits, and estate matters. These can also add to the cost. Maricopa County handles certified death records, which includes Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and much of the surrounding Valley. These are $20 for each certified copy. When ordering multiple copies for banks, insurance policies, and real estate, these third-party fees can quickly add up.

United Tissue Network offers two free certified death certificates for whole-body donors in Arizona.

Whole-Body Donation Offers a Different Path

For some Arizona residents, the decision is not simply which cremation provider to select.

United Tissue Network connects individuals who choose whole-body donation with qualified medical professionals and institutions that use these gifts to advance research, physician and surgeon education, medical training, and the development of new technologies. As a charitable 501(c)(3) organization accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks, UTN has helped more than 20,000 families turn an end-of-life decision into a contribution to future medical progress.

When a donor is accepted into the program, UTN covers transportation and cremation expenses associated with the donation. You can qualify for free cremation in Arizona when you become a whole-body donor with United Tissue Network, eliminating the fees for cremation services in Mesa, AZ, the cremation cost in Phoenix, or charges elsewhere around the state.

Most adults are eligible regardless of advanced age or medical conditions. The only automatic disqualifiers are those with contagious diseases like HIV/AIDS or hepatitis that might put medical professionals at risk. Cremated remains are also available upon prior request at no cost to families.
