Arizona Organ Donor Registry Removals and What They Mean for Body Donation

If you want to remove yourself from Arizona’s organ donor registry but still want to help medical research, those are not the same decision. Organ and tissue donation for transplantation and whole-body donation for medical research, education, and training are separate processes.

That means Arizona organ donor registry removals do not automatically prevent someone from later choosing to donate their body to science. If you’ve already registered for body donation, removing yourself from the AZ organ donor registry will not cancel your body donation registration. They are separate and you need to handle each individually.

What Arizona Organ Donor Registry Removal Does

You can change or remove your organ and tissue donor status at any time through DonateLifeAZ.

One important detail is easy to miss. Removing the donor designation from an Arizona driver’s license or state identification card does not necessarily remove a person’s registration from the donor registry itself. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, changes to registry status must be handled separately through DonateLifeAZ.

How to Remove Your Arizona Organ Donor Registration

Here are the steps to remove or change your organ donation status.

  • Online: Visit DonateLifeAZ.org, log in to your profile, and select “Remove Me..
  • By Phone / Email: Contact Donor Network of Arizona directly via phone at 602-241-5550 or email contact.us@dnaz.org.
  • At the ADOT MVD: Request the removal at any Arizona MVD office or online via AZ MVD Now (and remember to separately update your registration with DonateLifeAZ).

Still, the registry governs organ and tissue donation. It does not serve as a registration system for whole-body donation.

Organ Donation and Whole-Body Donation Have Different Purposes

Organ donation utilizes organs and tissues to perform life-saving transplants. Whole-body donation serves a different purpose.

Donated bodies support medical research, anatomy education, physician and surgeon training, and the development or testing of medical technologies. These gifts can help medical professionals improve procedures, understand anatomy, and advance knowledge that may benefit future patients.

They are separate programs, and you need to manage each separately. If you’ve already registered as a whole-body donor, you change your status by contacting United Tissue Network.

You Can Still Register for Whole-Body Donation

If you haven’t already registered with a body donation program and decide to remove yourself from the Arizona organ donor registry, you can still register for whole-body donation through United Tissue Network.

UTN is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), AATB-accredited organization that works with donors and families in Arizona. Registration documents your intention to make a whole-body donation for medical science, research, education, and training.

What If Someone Is Registered for Organ Donation and Body Donation?

Some people may be registered as organ donors while also making plans for whole-body donation.

These wishes are not necessarily incompatible, but circumstances surrounding organ or tissue donation may affect whether whole-body donation can later be accepted. Eligibility can depend on what donations occur and the individual’s condition at the time of death.

If someone is signed up for both, UTN will work with transplants teams to prioritize life-savings operations if possible.

Whole-Body Donation Can Also Affect Cremation Planning

For many Arizona families, end-of-life decisions also involve the cost of cremation.

A family arranging direct cremation in Phoenix on its own generally pays for services such as transportation, professional care, required paperwork, and the cremation itself. These expenses can create another decision at an already difficult time.

For accepted donors through United Tissue Network, transportation and cremation costs associated with the donation are covered. Families donating their body to medical science with UTN get free cremation in Arizona. This can be a significant benefit. The average cost of a direct cremation in Phoenix in 2026 is $1,437, not including a viewing or memorial service.

Those registered only as organ donors do not receive this financial benefit.

Make Sure Your Records Reflect Your Actual Wishes

Because these systems are separate, consider each decision individually.

If you are considering Arizona organ donor registry removals, verify your current DonateLifeAZ status rather than assuming a driver’s license change is enough. If you want to pursue whole-body donation, complete the registration separately with UTN and discuss your decision with close family members.

If you live in Phoenix, Tucson, or anywhere in Arizona and wish to pre-register for whole-body donation or ask questions about how body donation offsets end-of-life costs, contact United Tissue Network today or start your donor registration today.
